Chinese New Year is also called Spring Festival in China.

The Spring Festival is the most important and ceremonious traditional festival in China. Spring Festival is the lunar New Year. Spring Festival also is a family reunion for Chinese. Chinese people will go home from everywhere as much as possible during the Lunar New Year. Family reunions express people’s good wishes and look forward to the New Year.

The Spring Festival is called Guo Nian. Nian was a terrible animal in the legend. It lived on the seafloor. It came out from the seafloor and ate livestock and harmed people on lunar New Year’s Eve. But the Nian fear of the red color, fire and loud explosions. So people paste red couplets on the door and set off firecrackers to scare the Nian away. The next day is Chu Yi, people celebrate passing the Nian and congratulate each other. Passing means Guo in Chinese. So lunar New Year is Guo Nian in China. These customs of playing firecrackers, paste spring couplets and celebrations are still retained in Chinese New year today.

Chinese people will do a lot of work to welcome the New Year. They will clean up their house first, and then they purchase festival goods. They paste spring couplets on the door and hang up red lanterns in their house. People get together with their families and enjoy delicious foods on Spring Festival’s Eve. Dumplings are an important food at this special time. On Lunar New Year’s day, Chinese people also play firecrackers. They all dress in festival costumes and go out to drop a Spring Festival visit. They greet each other. Children will receive red envelopes as blessings. Everyone is bursting with happiness. The air is full of joyful atmosphere during the Spring Festival.
